Nancy Duarte breaks down the story structure and brilliance behind the famous “I Have a Dream” speech at Inbound 2013 during her session “Resonate: Present Visual Stories That Transform Audiences”

I recently had the opportunity to see Nancy Duarte speak about how to change the world through visual storytelling at HubSpot’s Inbound 2013 so today’s post is in honor of the 50th anniversary of the “I have a Dream” speech .

Nancy explains that there is a common thread throughout greatest speeches in history, a structural architecture that helps us understand how remarkable communicators like Steve Jobs, Evita, and of course – Martin Luther King Jr. transformed the world through the art of visual storytelling. Essentially, for an idea to transform the norm it needs a story line that ebbs and flows between the “What Is” (the status quo) and “What Could Be” (the bliss) using repetition, metaphors that create scenes with words, familiar songs, scriptures, and political reference to ignite the audience and inspire change.
